MIAMI BOATLIFT DESCRIPTION

In the Spring of 2008 there will be a boatlift carrying Americans in search of a better way of life going from Miami to Havanna. Artists, students, people needing medical care, homeless people and survivors of hurricane Katrina will be on board. This unusual event has been necessitated by the deteriorating conditions in The United States. 38 million Americans face hunger and 18% of children in the U.S. live in poverty. Many lack access to health care and education. Our government is unable to guaruntee our protection from natural disasters. Our civil rights are under attack.

* It is illegal for any US resident to travel to Cuba (even by way of other countries) or to trade with Cuba. Even immediate family members are only allowed to visit their relatives once every three years. Criminal violators of the Cuba sanctions can face up to 10 years in prison, $1 million in corporate fines and $250,000 in individual fines. The government can also seek up to $55,000 per violation in civil penalties.
